In Giethoorn a small boat with electric motor is because of the minor noise of the engine called a whisper boat. The whisperboats are driven by the motor and the gasbox. Steering is at the traditional way with a handle on the motor or with a steeringwheel like in a car. The whisper boat is a little more wobly than a comfortable boat but still quite easy to drive by yourself. The benches have a backrest which you can fold down for easy getting in and out the boat (with the exception of the bench of the driver's seat of the model with the handle).
You may drive this boat without any special licence. Minimim age is 16 for the driver however accompanied by adults a child may help steering on the lake. In this case you best choose the boat with the wheel. The boat has a gasbox with joystick to go up = forward and down = backword. Did you know a boat has no breaks? Breaking a boat is done by using the gas backwards. Actually you will use the gas backwards more for breaking than to actually drive backwards. The whisperboat with the motorhandle is operated a little different; you swing the handle to the left the boat turns to the right, but backwards is not the opposite way. You might think this is more difficult than the ones with the wheel but the thing is, it has a cheaper price, it is the traditional way and you have firm control on the handle. With the steeringwheel the danger might be that you are steering to much from side to side and will zigzag through the canals. Ofcourse we will tell you how to operate the boat at the start of your journey inside the Venice of Holland.
